The Hunter Vineyard

The Hunter Vineyard

The Hunter Vineyard is a privately-owned, boutique vineyard perched at the top of Old North Road in Pokolbin. First planted by Frank Brady in the 1970′s the vineyard was known as Taliondal and consisted of a small winery with rustic tasting tables under the giant box gums beside the dam.

Although small in quantity and varieties not common in The Hunter, the Cabernet Sauvignon, Traminer and Gerwurztraminer all  gained recognition from the experts, winning awards and attracting a devoted clientele. The latest releases, the 2011 Gewurztraminer and the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon have both won medals at the 2011 Hunter Wine Show and the Hunter Small Winemakers Show. The 2011 Gerwurztraminer also took bronze at  the 2011 NSW Small Winemakers Show in Forbes. The 2011 Gewurztraminer won silver at the 2011 International Aromatic Wine Show in New Zealand. Two golds, six silvers and sixteen bronzes were awarded in the Gewurztraminer class from a very strong field.

In 2008 the present owners purchased the property and began a comprehensive renovation of both vineyard and accommodation. They built a brand new two-bedroom cottage on the site once operated as a winery and shack which is now available for short term stays.

New trellising, wire, end posts and irrigation were created, with a new pump station, and the vines were coaxed back into producing high quality with low yield.

Renowned winemaker Nick Paterson of Dogliani Wines joined the team to produce the first of the new era Traminer and the first Cabernet Sauvignon since 2002. The first vintage has  produced  the 2009 Traminer which was awarded  Bronze at the 2010 Hunter Valley Wine Show and the 2010 Hydro Hunter Valley Boutique Winemakers’ Show.

Our 2009 Merlot won Silver at the 2010 Australian Small Winemakers Show.

The 2010 Traminer is  a beautifully balanced Traminer. Both the 2011 Gewurztraminer and the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon have won Bronze medals at the 2011 Hunter Wine Show. The Gewurztraminer also took bronze at the NSW Small Winemakers Show.
